A Coming Crisis

Student loan debt is a coming crisis for many students. There has to be a different way then to get out of college heavily in debt. Today we continue with baby step 5. Saving for your kids college. The baby steps are in order and you shouldn’t skip one to get to another. A house divide against itself cannot stand. Therefore, trying to save and payoff debt is a counter intuitive. Concentrate on paying off the debt then while your are debt free you can save, save, save.

Back to college savings. I have two daughters. As soon as they got their social security number I opened up an ESA. ESA stands for educational saving account. You can also use a 529 plan. I prefer the ESA but both have their pros and cons. Here are two articles that dive deeper into the subject. Article 1 and Article 2

However there is a third option. How about getting through college with your tuition paid for by someone else?

Every parent should read this book by Anthony Oneal, “Debt Free Degree.” Also if you go to Anthony’s website you can find resources to begin applying for scholarship money. His resources list hundred of scholarships.

This book helps you formulate a game plan that enables your children to find scholarship money. It helps students with a game plan to maximize your students chances of getting a high score in the SAT or ACT. Following his game plan you can minimize the expenses that college represents.

Helping your kids get through college debt free will free them up as they start their families and venture into the work force. It will be the one of the best gifts you can give them and all it take is having a plan and trusting in God.

If you have questions don’t hesitate to ask here. Take charge of your money!
