No Bats in this mouth!

Many are talking about the origins of Covid-19, aka the coronavirus. I want to share with you how God’s Word is awesome. In the book of Leviticus chapter 11 God talks about what He allows us to eat and what not to eat. My particular denomination, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, follows these Biblical guidelines. They have served us well as evidence by this article, Longest Lived People, and this video, Cultures of Longevity

According to some reports this particular virus began by contaminated bat meat. I cannot verify that, but I do know some cultures do eat bats. It is claimed that someone touched the dead animals flesh and rubbed it on their face. In areas where there are “Wet Markets” (you can read about them here) meat is sold in an open air area. These meats for the most part do not follow Biblical guidelines and therefore expose people to diseases. Some of the restricted meats are listed in the verse below.

“And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.” (Leviticus 11:19)

According to scripture the bat is forbidden for human consumption. Not only is it forbidden for consumption, but their dead flesh should not be touched or handled. If you touch these unclean animals, washing and temporary self-quarantine are recommended. Listen to the counsel of God:

“‘By these, moreover, you will be made unclean: whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening, and whoever picks up any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.” (Leviticus 11:24–25)

Neglecting these health laws has led to the spread of these various viruses throughout the world. Remember H1N1, also known as the swine flu? Swine is another animal whose dead flesh is forbidden to be eaten or touched.

If these Biblical guidelines would be followed, then we could avoid many of these pandemics. Read this quote by a health reformer in the late 1800’s:

“A neglect of cleanliness will induce disease. Sickness does not come without a cause. Violent epidemics of fevers have occurred in villages and cities that were considered perfectly healthful, and these have resulted in death or broken constitutions. In many instances the premises of the very ones who fell victims to these epidemics contained the agents of destruction which sent forth deadly poison into the atmosphere, to be inhaled by the family and the neighborhood. It is astonishing to witness the prevailing ignorance relative to the effects which slackness and recklessness produce upon health.” -Ellen G. White.

If you read the wet market link, these markets are found all over the world, not just in China. Due to the origin of the current pandemic there has been an increase of discrimination toward our Asian brothers and sisters that is uncalled for. If you claim to be a Christian and call Christ your Lord, there is no room for discrimination.

Jesus died for all of us. We are to love our neighbors and treat them as we would like to be treated. If a culture does not know what you know Biblically, discrimination is not the answer, Love is. Open a Bible with others that may not know what you just read here, and in a loving way point them to the truth as it is in Jesus.
